In Jeju Island the word for sweet potato is GamJa, but in standard Korean Gamja means potato There are other confusions like these but they are incommon, just most of the dialects are hard to understand because shorten words differently There are 7 dialects in Korea not including Standard Korean the lanuage used in Seoul and around that area The Seven Dialects In Korea Are The Hamyong Dialect The Hwanghae Dialect The Gangwon Dialect The Chungcheong Dialect The Gyeongsang Dialect The Jeolla Dialect The Jeju Dialect There are some discrimination because of the dialects that people may speak. The biggest discriniation might be the idea that people that do not know how to speak standard Korean is less knowledgable. One very intersting fact that i found from my research was that in Korea when people are playing house they use standard Korean without even knowing it! Korean Dialect
